When is my MOT due?

Updated 2 min readSources: GOV.UK

Quick answer

A car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, then every year. You can check the expiry date on GOV.UK with just the registration number. You can test up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and still keep the same renewal date.

How to check when your MOT runs out

  1. Open GOV.UK's MOT status (opens in a new tab) service and enter the registration number (number plate).
  2. Read the expiry date. The result also shows whether the vehicle has a current MOT certificate.
  3. Set a reminder (see below) so the date does not catch you out.

Our free MOT history check shows the same dates alongside every past result, and lets you ask for a free email reminder.

How early can you get an MOT?

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. If yours runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can test and still keep 15 May as next year's date is 16 April.

Test earlier than that and your next MOT is counted from the new test date, so you lose the time you had left.

When does a new car need its first MOT?

By the third anniversary of its registration. Some types of vehicle need testing at one year old; GOV.UK's MOT fees table shows which.

Get a free reminder

GOV.UK sends free reminders by text message or email one month before a car, van or motorcycle MOT is due. You need the registration number and a mobile number or email address. In Northern Ireland the system is different.

Warning: Do not let it lapse. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000. See can you drive without an MOT?

Common questions

Can I get an MOT more than a month early?

Yes, but your next MOT is then counted from the new test date, so you lose the time you had left on the old one.

What if my MOT ran out yesterday?

You cannot drive or park the vehicle on the road with it, except to drive to a pre-arranged MOT test or to or from somewhere to be repaired. Book a test straight away.

Do I need any documents to check my MOT date?

No. The registration number is all you need for GOV.UK's MOT status check.

Is the date the same every year?

It stays the same if you test within the month (minus a day) before it expires. Test earlier and the date moves.
